Black History Week

Age: Age: 5 years + Group size: 30 (150 in a full day)

Black History Week explores and traces back the roots behind historical events, sports and arts that have shaped black history. The week starts with an assembly to introduce the activities taking place. Each day a different art is explored, that day is then split into hourly sessions so that in each hour a different class can participate. Each hour workshop tells the history and relevance of the activity before participants take part in a traditional workshop.

We Have A Dream

We also offer the option of putting on a production of “We Have a Dream!” which is a musical play which outlines American Black History from 1968 and focuses on the Civil Rights Movement. It includes the inspirational stories of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Vivian Jones. This is suitable for KS2 children and can be run so that one class performs the whole production or so that different classes do certain acts.

'We Have a Dream!' acts as a great timeline and can help put into perspective the other activities the children have been involved in. It also helps contextualise current day role models such as Barack Obama and allows the children to see the importance of such role models in the wider world today.
